Do you have spatial data? Do you think maps are awesome? We do and we want to help you answer your spatial questions more effectively in Tableau. This presentation is framed around a set of common spatial questions (e.g. where is it, how far is it, how it is distributed, what is nearby, what is here, how does it compare to {location}) with demonstrations of our favorite practices for creative use of mapping and non-mapping viz features in Tableau. Join us to take your spatial analytics to the next level!

Avoiding data pitfalls

The road to data bliss and success is a well-worn path thanks to tools like Tableau, but it's also a path filled with common pitfalls that are important to know about and avoid. This session will show you practical examples of what not to do, and how to know when someone else has.

Level: New to Tableau

Beyond set actions | Interactive statistics

As seen in devs on stage, Tableau is bringing powerful new capabilities to interactive analytics. The applications for interactive statistics are profound. For example, identifying time series that are most highly correlated with a selection, cluster analysis applied to interactive outlier detection, baselining a stock’s performance against the market in general, correlating market value of players to their team’s performance in the World Cup, and tracking the turnover of (or time to resell) a selected cohort of properties. We recommend also attending “Ready, Set, Action” for an introduction to concepts applied in this session.

Boom goes the data engine | Turbocharging Tableau with Hyper

After the acquisition of the Hyper database technology, we shipped Tableau 10.5 with our brand-new Hyper data engine. This deep-dive talk sheds a light on Hyper's design philosophy and highlights the context in which the Hyper project was started. We use real-world analogies to illustrate how Hyper's core technology works and how it differentiates itself from other data engines and database systems. This session is not directly applicable to your daily work with Tableau, but lifts the curtain on one of our core technologies and provides food for thought on how the Hyper technology enables current and future Tableau customer scenarios.

Level: New to Tableau

Data literacy | Skills of critical thinkers

Data literacy is a critical skill in the 21st century. We believe this new skill will change the world in the same way that literacy transformed access to knowledge in the centuries after the printing press. However, just having access to new technology is not enough. The printing press automated the publishing process, but that still required people to learn to read and write. Similarly, the broad availability of data and analytical tools needs a fundamental change in human behavior. Data literacy is not just about consuming and understanding data visualizations but more importantly about applying the genuinely human traits of curiosity and critical thinking to your data.

Level: Intermediate

Data science applications with TabPy/R

In this session, we will learn how to deploy connections between Tableau and its advanced analytics external services. We will then utilize these connections to develop powerful and flexible data science applications that make the power of advanced statistics and machine learning available to business users and dashboard consumers at all levels.

Designing for a corporate standard

Tableau users are naturally more likely to adopt a dashboard if it feels familiar and customized for them. With so many options of how to format in Tableau, it can sometimes feel daunting to be assigned the task of implementing a seamless and repeatable corporate standard. In this session, you will learn how to create a unified look and theme across dashboards in Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server and on mobile devices, without even needed a degree in graphic design. You will also learn how to provide templates for your designs to be reused by others. Finally, the session will cover how to customize your Tableau Server interface or use the Javascript API to take advantage of existing user portals.

Prep your data | Introduction to Tableau Prep

Before the analysis of data even starts, reports show that 80% of your time is spent gathering, cleaning and preparing data. Why? Because data comes in a variety of files and sources, sizes, structures, and levels of quality. Wouldn’t you rather flip that statistic and spend your time performing the analysis and building great visual analytics and dashboards? If so, let us show you how we “mind the gap” and demonstrate how anyone can use Tableau Prep to reshape and refine data into usable data sets, allowing for analysis. During the session, we will reference common challenges our customers have when it comes to using data.

Level: New to Tableau

Ready, set, action!

As seen in devs on stage, Tableau is bringing powerful new capabilities to interactive analytics in 2018.3. The new set action feature means you can design custom interactivity beyond filtering and highlighting. Now you can colour, group, hide, or filter a single axis with a selection. The applications are monumental - proportional brushing, benchmarking, relationship analysis, period comparisons, conditional aggregation, and single member drill down to name a few. This session is a must for anyone who has ever wanted dynamic multi select parameters!
